The Mothman Prophecies (2002)
Released in 2002, The Mothman Prophecies is an American supernatural horror-mystery film. It’s based on the 1975 book of the same title by John Keel. The events in the book and movie highlight events that took place between November 1966 and December 1967 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.
Richard Hatem wrote the screenplay for The Mothman Prophecies, and Mark Pellington directed. Gary W. Goldstein, Gary Lucchesi, and Tom Rosenberg produced the film, and Richard Gere and Laura Linney are the two stars.
In the movie, reporter John Klein is researching the legend of Mothman. He’s forced to go to Point Pleasant, West Virginia, to report on random sightings of an unknown creature and some unexplained paranormal events. As he dives into his work, he hopes to reconnect with his wife, who had died in a mysterious accident two years prior. The local sheriff, Connie Mills, becomes concerned with Klein’s behavior.
As is the case with many supernatural movies, The Mothman Prophecies garnered mixed reviews. Critics gave it a 52 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The film won the Best Sound Editing: Music in a Feature Film award from the Society of the Motion Picture Sound Editors. The Mothman Prophecies made over $55 million worldwide and is a must-watch for any cryptozoology fan.
Eyes of the Mothman (2011)
Matthew J. Pellowski wrote and directed this 2011 full-length documentary Eyes of the Mothman.
The film tells the story behind the 1966 Silver Bridge Collapse, or Mothman murders. Prior to more than 40 deaths, Mothman popped up around Point Pleasant, West Virginia. This documentary hypothesizes what could have happened, including an old Indian curse or a UFO abduction.
This film wasn’t rated by critics on Rotten Tomatoes but received a 46 percent from the audience. This is a film for anyone interested in what actually happened to the Silver Bridge in 1966. While less entertaining, it gives viewers a plethora of great information.
Mothman (2010 – TV Movie)
Mothman, which has the same title as its 2000 predecessor, is a direct-to-TV horror film that aired on the SyFy channel. Sonny Lee and Patrick Walsh wrote the film, while Sheldon Wilson served as the director. Jewel Staite and Connor Fox starred in the film.
In the movie, a group of seven friends cover up an accidental murder. Years later, they return for the Mothman Festival only to be picked off one by one by the famous cryptid. Seeking safety, the group finds help from Frank Waverly, a blind old man who has been searching for Mothman for years. Can he help save their lives, or will the dangerous cryptid add to its body count?
This Final Destination-esk film received the lowly score of 20 percent from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes. But there is a very limited sample size of reviews. Many critics who said they hated the film also said they were wildly entertained during it. It’s definitely worth the hour and a half to watch it.
Amityville: Mt. Misery Rd. (2018)
Chuck Morrongiello wrote this 2018 horror, mystery, thriller, Amityville: Mt. Misery Rd. Chuck Morrongiello and Karolina Morrongiello directed and starred in the film, too.
As the story goes, a ghost-hunting couple is fascinated by the most haunted road in America – Mt. Misery Road. The surrounding woods are said to be haunted by a number of evil creatures, including Mothman. The couple is warned to stay away but ignores this sound advice. They quickly become imprisoned in the woods with a number of hellish creatures on the loose.
This movie was given negative reviews all around. It received only a 17 percent on Rotten Tomatoes with only six viewers rating the film. But this film is a diamond in the rough. Give it a chance, and you won’t (might not) be disappointed.

The movie is about an artist who has a fearful encounter with Mothman. Despite warnings from locals, he tries to prove where the creature lives. Then, men in black enter the picture, adding a bit of uncertainty as to what will happen next.
This film got surprisingly good reviews for a “tweener,” or between-genres, movie. Overall, it scored a 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb by users. This is one of the most interesting Mothman movies available right now.
